In May 2008, IDW Publishing became the latest in the line of comics publishers to acquire the comics publishing rights to G.I. Joe.[1] An all new continuity for the A Real American Hero series was introduced, with three starting titles; additional titles would be introduced over the fourteen years, including a continuation of the original Marvel Comics' A Real American Hero series, penned by original writer Larry Hama, picking up where that series had left off.

  • G.I. Joe - preceded by a "zeroth issue" one-shot, through five volumes/series (ending in 2017) [a sixth IDW nine-issue series, along with a one-shot, was published in 2019 as a separate continuity].
  • G.I. Joe: Origins - a second series that explored the setup of the new continuity over 23 issues (2009-2011).
  • G.I. Joe: Cobra - two mini-series, two continuing series, and three one-shots focusing on Cobra (2009, 2010-2011, and 2011-2013).
  • G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes - two continuing series, the first re-titled G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow upon its thirteenth issue (2011-2013, 2015) [a preceding mini-series was based in the film continuity].
  • G.I. Joe: Hearts & Minds - a "day in the life of" one Joe and one Cobra, over five issues (2010).
  • G.I. Joe: Infestation - two-issue mini-series that formed chapters within the larger Infestation cross-over mini-series (2011).
  • G.I. Joe: Cobra Civil War - a cross-over series (within the G.I. Joe continuity) that began with G.I. Joe: Cobra Civil War #0 and the first eight issues each of the second G.I. Joe, the third Cobra, and first Snake-Eyes series, detailing the competition for the selection of a new Cobra Commander.
  • Infestation 2: G.I. Joe - the G.I. Joe component to the two-issue Infestation 2 cross-over mini-series, itself a sequel to the 2011 mini-series (2012).
  • G.I. Joe: Special Missions - comprised of fourteen issues (2013-2014).
  • G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files - considered a fourth Cobra continuing series, picking up where the third completed for nine issues (2013).
  • G.I. Joe: Revolution - a one-shot associated with the Revolution cross-over mini-series (2016).
  • Revolutionaries - an eight-issue continuing series that utilized characters from different cross-over series under IDW license and included a core group that had G.I. Joe character Mayday (2016-2017).
  • M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand Annual 2017 - a one-shot that had the G.I. Joe team combine forces with the titular group (2017).
  • G.I. Joe First Strike - a one-shot associated with the Revolution sequel, First Strike (2017).
  • Scarlett's Strike Force - an intended eight-issue series that was canceled with the third issue (2017-2018).

The stories in this continuity are generally regarded as a grittier take on G.I. Joe but do not shy away from science fiction elements, such as the M.A.S.S.. While IDW has access to all characters from any era of G.I. Joe, the concepts generally revolve around A Real American Hero.

IDW lost the license to the G.I. Joe franchise in December 2022 to Image Comics.
