Cobra Commander sends the Night-Creepers on a mission to assassinate Storm Shadow.

Detailed summary

Cobra Commander is meeting with Aleph, leader of the Night Creepers, a ninja sect who have offered him their services as spies and assassins. Aleph reminds him that the Baroness has left Cobra and Zartan is missing. Cobra Commander gives him a first assignment: Making an example of a traitor to Cobra. Aleph says the man is their enemy as well and the timing is bad since he is in federal custody. When Cobra Commander accuses him of being scared, several Night Creepers emerge from where they had been hiding undetected. Aleph says they will kill their target but it will mean abandoning stealth. One of the Vipers wants to shoot him when he throws a knife that just misses Cobra Commander, but Cobra Commander knows it was just a demonstration and says to let them leave, even though the two groups don't trust each other.

A trio of ruffians led by a man named Eltron board a subway train. They attempt to mock Stalker and Storm Shadow, but a quick glare from the pair is enough to send them running. Storm Shadow says they'll head to his hideout and leads the way to the expensive Montana Tower: He doesn't live there, but goes in often enough that the doorman thinks he does. He leads Stalker on a complicated route up to the water tower on the roof, where he has a safe house stocked with weapons. Meanwhile, the Night Creepers break into the room in the Statue of Liberty where Storm Shadow was held and learn of his and Stalker's escape.

At the hospital, General Crowther tells Scarlett of the escape and tries to get information from her on the hideaway, suggesting she wants revenge on Storm Shadow for sending Snake-Eyes on a suicide mission. Scarlett replies that she'll take revenge herself but Hawk warns her not to get out of bed and takes Crowther into the corridor. Sioban enters and Scarlett points out she already agreed to sign the family house over to her. Sioban says she just wanted to make sure there are no hard feelings and Scarlett tells her to come closer. Hawk threatens Crowther, wanting to know why he arrested Storm Shadow and Stalker and why Snake-Eyes was in Borovia. Crowther tries to pass it off as top secret and need-to-know but Hawk isn't convinced. Sioban apparently walks past them but Hawk then finds her tied up, gagged and stripped of her clothes in Scarlett's bed.

The Night Creepers approach Storm Shadow's hideout along the outside of the building. Storm Shadow and Stalker see them coming and fight back. Aleph tells the others that Storm Shadow is their target but to kill Stalker if he tries to interfere. Storm Shadow leads them back down the side of the building, leaving Stalker behind.

Back in the subway, Eltron's gang confront Scarlett, who quickly overcomes Eltron and takes his knife. Storm Shadow appears, pursued by the Night Creepers. Scarlett confronts him for sending Snake-Eyes to certain death. As a flurry of arrows heads their way, Storm Shadow grabs Scarlett and hurls them both into the path of an oncoming train. After the train has passed, Aleph finds blood on the tracks and gives the order to search the tunnel for body parts.

Storm Shadow is balancing in between the carriages, holding Scarlett. He tells her he thought she was dying, that he thought sending Snake-Eyes to Borovia to rescue George Strawhacker in a killing trance was the best thing for him, and that he intended to go and retrieve Snake-Eyes himself. He then collapses with Scarlett's knife in his back. Scarlett is horrified.

Real-world references

  • All the Night-Creepers' names are taken from letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Are they Jewish ninjas?
