The Baroness has been captured by Cobra, Destro and the others are still on the run, and the new G.I Joe Ninja Force is brought in to help.

Detailed summary

Zartan realizing that their helicopter is low on fuel, so he wakes up Destro to pilot the aircraft low over a train’s tank car. Zartan then jumps onto the tank car and begins refueling the helicopter.

Destro is not happy about being taken away from the Baroness, but Billy reminds him that they would have been killed if they had stayed. Destro vows to take back his castle and the Baroness. Chuckles offers to help him off the record.

Meanwhile, the Joes are sifting through the remains of Destro’s castle, and Lady Jaye believes that Cobra Commander will hunt down and kill Destro. However, Hawk thinks there may be an open contract on Destro’s head, so he sends Snake Eyes to protect him.

Cobra Commander puts a bounty of twenty million dollars on Destro’s head, and several groups, including the Night Creepers, the Corsican Brotherhood, and the Beirut Terrorist Front, decide to try to cash in on the offer.

Chuckles lands the helicopter in France, trades it for cash and a car, and parks the car in front of a bar where the Corsican Brotherhood is located. The BTF receives information from the auto dealer that Destro was seen leaving the dealership, and they attack the bar while Zartan, Destro, Billy, and Chuckles watch from a nearby boat. The boat is attacked by a helicopter full of Night Creepers, but they are defeated.

Finally, in New York, Storm Shadow’s training of Ninja Force is interrupted by a call for help from Snake Eyes. Storm Shadow takes the Ninja Force to help in Beirut.

Other Notes

Errors

  • Chuckles' sweater changes colour between panels on page 3.
  • One is tempted to put Hawk's new costume in the "errors" category, especially the Kirby-esque boxing helmet thingy. Then you see Ninja Force, and know that the godawful 90s outfits have started in earnest. What kind of ninja wears neon green?!?

Items of note

  • First appearance: Dojo, Nunchuk and T'jbang; the Arbco Valdez.
  • Techno-Vipers and Tele-Vipers are mentioned but not seen.
  • The Night-Creepers are treated like an independent faction. Perhaps Cobra Commander fired them after their earlier failure?
  • The 3 new ninjas all have Arashikage connections:
    • T'jbang was a student of Professor Onihashi
    • Nunchuk was trained by the Blind Master
    • Dojo was trained by the Soft Master
  • They also train in the basement beneath the Soft Master's old bodega.
  • One of the more memorable (and prescient) moments of this era of the series' run: the aforementioned three ninjas pausing their battle so Storm Shadow can answer his cell phone (at a point where the first-time reader doesn't realize they're Joes and this is a training exercise). His cell, by the way, is comically huge by today's standards, but would probably have been state-of-the-art at the time.

Dossiers

  • The dossier in this issue features Firefly... ruining his surprise return in a few months.

Real-world references

  • Cobra's new ship is a reference to the infamous Exxon Valdez.
