But Shang-Chi knew nothing of this as he was raised by his father, who pretended to be a noble man dedicated to world peace. He then ordered Shang-Chi to kill Petrie. Shang-Chi believed he had done so (though it was only a replicant) but this brought him into contact with Nayland Smith who told him the truth of his father. Shang-Chi joined with Nayland Smith, Petrie, Black Jack Tarr an ex soldier and Clive Reston, a smooth talker in the war against Fu Manchu.

- Fu Manchu and many of the characters around him were originally created for a series of novels by Sax Rohmer. The comic rights to the novels were purchased by Marvel in the 1970s who combined them with their original character of Shang-Chi.
