Greenshirts were alerted to an aerial assault by Cobra and quickly defended the G.I. Joe base as best they could. Sadly, many Skystrikers were still destroyed. The Greenshirts get some satisfaction when the Joe Team investigated Dr. Vandermeer regarding Cobra's ability to teleport and end up rescuing the scientist.[1] Greenshirts joined in the action to board the Cobra helicarrier over the Ring of Fire.[2] More took part in the uphill battle to storm the Cobra Temple in the mountains.[3]

A Real American Hero comics continuity - Marvel Comics
There was never any acknowledgement in the plot of extra, unnamed Joes in the comic. Certainly not an army of them like in the cartoon. Nevertheless, generic-looking troopers in green uniforms that cannot be identified with any named G.I. Joe made infrequent appearances as background characters.[4] This may be an issue with the artwork more than anything else.

Trivia
- The Greenshirts are named after the Redshirts in Star Trek. A red shirt was the uniform of security officers who had minor or non-speaking roles in landing parties and usually got killed to establish the threat level. Consequently the term "Redshirt" has become a cultural term for expendable background characters.
