Intelligence Officer Shana O'Hara, later known as Scarlett, is the one that started everything. Determined to prove that Cobra Industries is evil, she led the team that would later become G.I. Joe to investigate a Cobra facility.
She is a whiz with computers, is often seen with a crossbow, and was trained in Ninjitsu by Snake-Eyes. She often "translates" for him, and is shown to have a rather intimate bond with him.
Shana O'Hara was the daughter of a scientist, Patrick O'Hara, who worked for Cobra Industries. They were close, but over time their relationship became strained. The summer before she went to college, her father told he he was sending her to school early, so she could move in before the big rush. She was angry that he was breaking his promise to spend time with her, but he gave her a necklace as a going away gift. A week later, she received word that her father had been killed in an explosion.
After college Shana joined the military and spent years tracking Cobra's secrets, a path that eventually led her to become an intelligence officer in the U.S. Military. With the help of the ninja Snake-Eyes, her search took her to a Cobra pharmaceutical plant near the town of Springfield, which, she had learned, housed a secret sub-basement that held something sinister and would blow Cobra wide open if it were revealed.
Under the pretense of investigating a "terrorist threat" against the company, O'Hara sent Lady Jaye to organize a team of soldiers, including Sergeant Conrad "Duke" Hauser, Private Wallace Weems, Private Nicky Lee, and Corporal Marvin Hinton.
