Lady Jaye and an injured Hawk fight through Borovia, gaining the help of the White Clown and Magda. Meanwhile, Firefly heads back to Cobra Island to blackmail Cobra Commander.

Detailed summary

Hawk awakens in Borovia and, together with Lady Jaye, Magda, and the White Clown, launches an assault on the security police. The group heads to a soccer field, where Hawk is aware of a hidden secret. As they start digging, the security police close in on them, advancing with a tank.

Just in time, the rest of the Joes arrive, effectively stopping the tank's progress. Their efforts pay off as Hawk discovers the buried treasure—a stash of gold bullion hidden beneath the soccer field, which he had learned about through satellite surveillance.

The Joes use the gold to bribe the security guards to leave, and Hawk is airlifted away for medical treatment. Grateful for their help, Magda guarantees the Joes immunity and a safe exit from Borovia.

Meanwhile, Firefly reaches Cobra Island to meet with Cobra Commander. Upon scanning Firefly's 747, no other life forms are detected on board, aside from Firefly himself. Firefly proposes a deal to Cobra Commander, offering the location of the Pit in exchange for two and a half million dollars.

However, Cobra Commander double-crosses Firefly, capturing him inside the freighter after obtaining the valuable information.

Unbeknownst to the Commander, Firefly's brainwashed ninjas awaken from the Sleeping Phoenix trance, hidden on the 747, with orders to rescue Firefly from his confinement.

As Cobra Commander departs the island to target the Pit, an ominous feeling looms over Spirit in Utah, sensing that something is approaching.

The stage is set for an intense confrontation as the Joes prepare to defend their base and rescue their allies.

Other Notes

Errors

  • The ninjas use "The Sleeping Phoenix" to hide from the scanning crew - that's the healing technique Storm Shadow used to remain alive when he was shot by Baroness.[1] The technique Snake-Eyes used to feign death was "The Way of the Anvil."[2]
  • "Halliburton" should have two L's.

Items of note

  • Bezpo stands for "Bezpiecszenstow Policja" - try saying that five times fast!
  • Road Pig uses a chainsaw, instead of his usual cinder-block-on-a-stick. Maybe he borrowed it from Buzzer.

Dossiers

  • The dossier in this issue features Torpedo.

Real-world references

  • Studs was an extremely short-lived and obscure dating game in the early '90s.
  • Firefly asks for $2.5 million in a Zero Halliburton briefcase. When that fails, he haggles for $1 million in a Kmart bag.
    • Zero Halliburton is the company that makes the fancy metal briefcase often seen in movies and tv shows,[3] and should not be confused with the energy company that's about as close to a real-life Cobra as we've got.
